efile

I can't efile my NY State return because it says it contains   a "solar and wind energy credit carry over" which I cannot correct.

Please ensure the total amount of unused solar energy equipment carry forward entered is the same amount transferred from your 2020 Form IT-255. If you did not carry forward any credit, you can remove the credit from your NY return.

Please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on State on the left-hand side.
  3. Continue through the return.
  4. On the page, Take a look at New York credits and taxes, scroll down to Unused Solar Energy Credit Carryover from Prior Years.
  5. Delete the unused credit on the page Credit Carryover Earned in Prior Years or make sure that the total amount of unused solar energy equipment carry forward you entered is the same amount transferred from your 2020 Form IT-255.

I followed your instructions a number of times and even entered zero for each year. The response was no unused solar energy credit for 2021.  If I go back to the same, the zeros I entered are not there - just blanks.   A review of both returns say I can't efile because of Unused Solar Energy Carryover

Since that did not work for you, please delete the form from your return.

To do so, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your tax return.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a Form
  4. Scroll down to your state forms and look for the form IT-255 and click Delete

When I click on tools I do not have the choice to delete a form

I have the only following choices: My Tax Data, Final Review, Topic List, Attachments, Calculator, Tax Summary, Tax History, and Order History

You are using one of the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions.  The instruction were for the online editions.

Click on Forms.  When in Forms mode locate the form you want to delete on the left side of the screen.  Click on the form to open.  At the bottom of the form screen click on the Delete Form button

In forms mode, IT-255 is not listed under forms for NY State

Yes, if you have not made any entries for the form in the "Step-by-step" then the form will not appear in your menu.  However, you find the form in the program and add it.

  1. Click on the "Open Form" ICON in the top of your left hand menu.
  2. Expand the NY forms dropdown
  3. Scroll down to the form IT-255.
  4. Click on the form
  5. Click "Open Form" at the bottom of the pop up box.
  6. You can give the form a name
  7. Click "Open Form."

I'm confused.  We started out by trying to delete IT-255 and now we are trying to install it.

Hello Mark,

I entered fictitious numbers to make the form IT-255 appear in my list, and it did. But even after I deleted the form, I still got the same error at then end, saying I cannot file because of solar carryover...etc.

THIS IS WHAT FINALLY WORKED: Copied from another user (a couple of years ago):

This finally worked!!  Thanks so much!  If you have an on-line version of Turbotax, you can't see lines so you have to go to the section "Other Tax Credits" then "Non-Refundable Credits".  After you get to that section, make sure those boxes are blank!  I had zeros in both boxes.

Hope this helps everyone!

PS: never enter zeros again for blank.
