Anyone else’s CA state return get rejected due to charitable contributions?

Per the email it says my state return was rejected due to:

What happened

CA_CharitableContributions_Hold - Your tax return was rejected due to an issue with California Charitable Contributions

I went back through my state return and it all looked fine to me. I’m guessing there is some glitch in the system because it says to come back the 17th or after and go through your state return and fix any prompts. Anyone else having this same issue?

Yes I got this message : CA Charitable Contributions Hold - Your tax return was rejected due to an issue with California Charitable Contributions.

Went through the entire Fed and State process and did not find anything related to the charitable contributions issue. Clearly I need support since I did not include any charitable contributions in the Fed or State filings because it did not make any difference to the amount of tax.

I spoke with support on the phone and shared my screen with her and she said it was most likely something they need to update so to try and refile according to the instructions below she tried to blame me for the issue and took absolutely no ownership for the problem with their software. In my opinion it has to be a system error with their software as it has a future date to refile the CA state taxes when you go to fix my return it says:

Description of error:
Your tax return was rejected due to an issue with California Charitable Contributions.
What needs to be done:
ACTION NEEDED: Important Information About Your California Tax Return Your California tax return wasn't e-filed because of an issue in the return. But hang on, we're here to help you fix what went wrong and get the return filed. What do I do now? If you're using a CD or downloaded version of TurboTax: -On or after February 17th, update TurboTax (visit our Support Site if you need help updating) -Go back through your California return from the beginning -Make any corrections if prompted -E-file your return (you won't be charged for e-filing) If you're using the online version: -On or after February 17th, log into your TurboTax Online account -Go back through your California return from the beginning -Make any corrections if prompted -E-file your return (you won't be charged) We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for using TurboTax!

Pretty terrible considering they continually make me pay for the deluxe or premier software only to have glitches like this. If this doesn't get resolved by just resubmitting after tomorrow I'll be e-mailing a lot of their people with my dismay. Also getting to an option to a live person on the phone takes a good 15 minutes because their automated system is absolutely terrible.

Dean-I just went back and put $0 for charitable contributions (it's a pop up that asks how much you donated to charity on the fed side) deleted my old state return and imported the info again from my fed return and my state return was accepted ~30 minutes after refiling. For something so arbitrary not effecting how much I owe or get back it's obnoxious. Hope this helps.

Hi:

I am having the same problem... my CA state return has been rejected twice and each time I received an e-mail with this message:

CA_CharitableContributions_Hold - Your tax return was rejected due to an issue with California Charitable Contributions.

I have checked and re-checked my return, and everything is accurate.  Turbo Tax needs to fix this issue.

I shared my screen with an expert and he had no idea what was wrong. He sent me a follow up email telling me to delete the state return and do it all over again. As others have mentioned about changing the donation on Federal Return, that seems to be the issue. Other forums have mentioned the same, the issue is on the federal side. I’ll try this and see if I have any luck.

Did you receive any help? I am experiencing the same issue. Thanks

Try going back to federal return and change the donations to $0. It seems to be glitch that’s occurring on federal side. Once you do that, redo the state return and it should get accepted.

@Jkastrow thank you! did you have to delete you state return and start again? also, did you federal return already get accepted?

Yes, twice now. I went thru the 'lets fix my taxes' or something close to that option. That was last night on 02/16/22. This morning 02/17/22 (obviously lol) another text alert that California rejected my return and yes for the same reason:

[California return rejectionReject Code CA_CharitableContrib].
I'm going to try now again to fix the error. I donated over $300. to charities, we'll over. If I'm not mistaken, the max amount eligible to actually claim is $300. for donation amount. I do not need the tax break so I am hoping to just delete that entry to get it moving.

I received that exact message and I paid a pretty penny for the extra upgrades too! I'm going to try to fix it again.

Odd because my Fed was accepted right away. California has the issues.

Yes but it will just reimport whatever info is on the fed side. My fed return was accepted and refund approved while my state sat in rejected while I was fixing it. As mentioned above go back to the federal side and $0 out the question asking how much you donated to charity, delete your state return and reimport it after you $0’ed out the fed side and refile the state taxes and it should go through, this is what I did and it worked yesterday.

I had the EXACT same error but I reside in KY. My federal taxes were accepted the same day, within a few hours, but my state has rejected twice now! I think it is a system issue with TurboTax which considering what I pay shouldn't be happening.

Same issue as everyone above.

For all those experiencing this issue I recommend trying the above to fix the state return. Go back zero out your fed charitable contributions (even if it’s been accepted and approved already this doesn’t matter) then delete your state return and hit start over and it should go through as long as you $0’ed out the question asking how much you donated towards charity on your fed return.

Just got off with support, they were pretty helpful. They said it's a known bug and they expect it to be fixed 20 Feb, and to re-submit after then.

Anyone got their CA tax accepted?

I resubmitted again yesterday (2/17), so far, nothing. Excepting it to get rejected too.

I took the Standard Deduction, so I didn't input anything for charitable donations. However, when I checked on Fed Tax printout, it shows $600 under "Standardized Deduction", line 12b. I don't even know how to take it out. I went through my Fed Tax too, did not have a place for me to input the charitable donation, hence, I couldn't adjust that.

This is frustrating.

oh gawwwwd... so for those of us resubmitted on 2/17, it will be rejected again, ......., great...

i hope it has no negative impacts and flag our tax returns.

Can’t imagine there would be, I submitted mine 3 times before it got accepted using the $0 out charitable contribution trick on the fed return side. What I find funny is TurboTax taking absolutely no ownership of the problem saying it’ll be fixed by the 17th only to have people continue to file and have them reject then say oh you need to wait until the 20th now. Especially for everyone (I’m sure all of us) who paid for a “premium” TurboTax product.

Interesting, so I went in and did what you did, but it only refiled my state. Did your fed get refiled?

Nope my fed return was accepted and refund approved while fixing my CA state return and it’ll only refile your state if you’ve already transmitted your fed return I believe, if your feds been accepted then I wouldn’t worry about it. Is it showing that it was transmitted to CA with a date and time instead of just saying “Pending”?

Yes! Mines keep saying that. I called and talked to an agent yesterday, he said there was a software error with CA and should refile after the 17 today is the 18th I refiled but it’s still getting rejected so I’m not sure what’s going on .

yes, same here.  I received a rejection again today after lowering it yesterday. Today I just deleted the whole amount being it was only a $20 difference.

carief

ok, after reading what the other poster (@jme02100 ) did. I redid my Fed Tax from step one and found that CAREs ACT donation of $600. I just completely removed any amount. There's no other donations mentioned in my taxes anywhere. I just refiled again, so hopefully it gets accepted.

My Fed Tax was accepted within hours of submission, so it was not resubmitted again with CA tax.

I did some research and found out that CA does not allow any donations beyond $250 this year without documentation. Although Fed Tax allows up to $600, it's safer to remove any amount for purpose of CA filing. Fingers crossed for this submission.
