AL 2019 Schedule A Itemized Deductions

On Alabama 2019 Schedule A-Itemized Deductions, line 17 did not calculate correctly. Lines 14-16 was supposed to have been added together and the total entered on line 17.  What do I do?

Verify the calculation.

After paying for the program, you can download the forms from Left Menu>Tax Tools>Print Center and look for calculation worksheets in the Alabama tax return.

While you are allowed to deduct charitable donations that may or may not have been claimed on the federal return, the Alabama deduction is subject to additional restrictions. Calculate the limits based on Alabama adjusted gross income, not the federal adjusted gross income.

Click on the Alabama Form 40 Booklet to learn more about Schedule A Donations limitations, starting on page 19

Limit on the amount you may deduct Get Federal Pub. 526 to figure the amount of your deduction if any of the following applies:

  • Your cash contributions or contributions of ordinary income property to certain organizations are more than 30% of Form 40, page 1, line 10.
  • Your gifts of capital gain property to certain organizations are more than 20% of Form 40, page 1, line 10.
  • You gave gifts of property that increased in value or gave the use of property as gifts.

The answer I received to my AL 2019 Schedule A Itemized Deductions question was extremely helpful.  This was my first time attempting to do my own tax returns.  The answer given pointed me to the correct places to research why Turbo Tax calculated the itemized deduction amount as shown on my return.  After reading the material suggested, I manually calculated my entire Alabama Tax Return (from beginning to end) and got the same results as Turbo Tax.  It was good for me to understand the "why" behind the numbers.  Thanks so much for the guidance.
