Self employed and immigrant

Hi, a few months ago I asked some questions and I got an amazing help.

so I work for myself, I’m a consider a resident alien by substance presence, and I’ve been paying my taxes from my home countryb(Chile). I’ve learnt that since I’ve been here i  should’ve pay / fill taxes here and not Chile, but also there’s double treaty that we’ve been trying to figuring out.

So I wanted to start filling & paying taxes here, and we were working in getting my Itin and order to get my itin I also needed to send form 1040, 1040 schedule C, 1040 SE and another one that I forgot, with all the maths going on, it seems I would own 12.000 to the IRS, when I barely made less than 50.000 on 2024, I wonder if that could be the right number or we could be doing something wrong.

p.S I’ve been trying to get help from taxes accountant, but they’ve been back in forth, telling me that I should get a immigrant attorney to di this (doesn’t makes sense) or they don’t know understand how to do it, or I’ve booked an appointment and they stood me up, so is been a little hard to trying to figure it out everything.

I hope I gave all the information needed to have more insight. Sorry if I’m missing something.

Yes, you are correct, you will have to report this income to the United States.  You will have to get an ITIN number, and if you meet the requirements for residency, you will need to file form 1040.

  1. Regarding the ITIN application, you will have to file a form W7 and send it with your tax return.  You will have to attach some documentation with the application, for each of the people that are applying for an ITIN. You will have to mail your return, along with the application and your documents. Visit the TurboTax help article for more information:  How do I get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?
  2. For reporting the income, you are correct, you will need to complete a Schedule C to report your self-employment income and expenses.  Make sure that you report not only your income but also the expenses you had so you can deduct them from your total sales.  See the below help articles for more information regarding reporting your self-employment income:

Where do I enter Schedule C?

What self-employed expenses can I deduct?

TurboTax will guide you as you enter your information.  Feel free to reach out again if you have any additional questions.
