How to Amend Form 1040-ES

I sent estimated tax payments for 2023 to the IRS, but I input the wrong tax identification number on the coupons. So, now the estimated payments went to the wrong account. How do I correct this? Thanks.

Gather your bank statements to show you actually made the payments. Make sure you know the social security number (SSN) you used for the estimated payments.  Once you have all the required detail you can do one of two things.

  • Mail the documentation with a copy of an estimated tax voucher if you have one to the IRS address where you live. (see below)
    • IRS Address (select your state for the correct address)  This will take the longest for results.
  • Contact the IRS by phone or try to set up an appointment at the closest office.
