1099-NEC

How do you report income from participating in a clinical trial in Turbotax?  The choices in TurboTax (shown below) don't describe my situation.

Self employment income, Farm income, Hobby, Lawsuit settlement, Medicaid waiver payments that qualify as difficulty of care, Income that should've been reported on a W-2

You should report that as "Other Income".  To do so in TurboTax Online:

  • Click on Search and type in "Form 1099-MISC"
  • Click on "Jump to form 1099-misc"
  • Answer Yes to "Did you get a 1099-MISC?"
  • Enter the information on your 1099-MISC.  The amount you received should be in Box 3.
  • Give a description - For example "Clinical Study"
  • On the next screen mark the radio button to indicate that you "...were in a research study and this was the payment." Then indicate No, that you did not perform a service.
  • This will add your income to Form 1040, Schedule 1, Line 10 as "Other Income".
