Why won't TurboTax accept my 1099R input?

TurboTax keeps telling me its waiting on the IRS regarding the 1099R and won't even let me input the data. The data isn't going to change so why can't TurboTax just let us enter it.

Are you trying to import your 1099R?

I'm fine with just entering the data from the hard copy I received, but TurboTax won't let me do that.

Are you using TurboTax Desktop?  Make sure all your updates are installed.  In the top margin, select "Online" then "Check of Updates".  The 2020 1099R screens were updated for Covid related distributions from retirement plans and required the Form 8915-E: Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments.

To enter a 1099R In TurboTax Online,  after you have logged in and are in your return in TurboTax Online:

  • Go to Search at the top of the screen.
  • Enter Form 1099-R in the search box.
  • You will see a Jump To function that will take you to the 1099-R input screens.
  • Then add a new 1099R and manually enter your 1099R.

At the financial services screens, click "Change how I enter my form" then "Type it myself"

None of the directions work.  We have 3 1099-R.  How to enter the data?

For a 2020 tax return you must be using the 2020 desktop CD/Download editions.  The TurboTax online editions are only for tax year 2021.

Go to this website to purchase and download one of the prior year desktop editions - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R
