What are net Social Security benefits?

Are net benefits the same as benefits paid by check or Direct Deposit?

On your form SSA-1099, net benefits are shown in box 5. It is the difference between your benefits paid in 2022 (box 3) and the benefits you may have repaid to the SSA in 2022 (box 4).

The benefits received by check or direct deposit are usually less than your net benefits as they are paid after deduction of the Part B premiums.

On your tax return, you should report Net benefits shown in box 5 of form SSA-1099.
