You should start out in the:

  • Income
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • Select Social Security
  • Post the information that corresponds to the boxes.

If this still doesn't work, please give us a little more detail about what is going on.

I am unable to enter Net Benefits amount for my Social Security income.
Nothing happens when I click on the form and try to enter anything.

@herblison1948

are you using the Desktop software?

IF so, and you see a "$0" in a field that won't let you enter anything?...try a double-click on that field......you might have a "Supporting Details" sheet attached to that field, usually one that transferred from last year's forms.

But that's only for Desktop software users.

I am unable to enter the Net Benefit on Social Security also.  I think it is a program error.  Any one else with this problem?

If you are using TurboTax Online, you can enter Social Security Benefits following these steps:

  1. In the Federal > Income & Expenses section, scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security and click Start/Revisit next to Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)
  2. Answer Yes to Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 2021?
  3. Click the Social Security benefits box. This will bring up several fields and the corresponding boxes on your SSA-1099

If you are using TurboTax Desktop:

  1. In the Personal / Personal Income section, scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security and click Start/Visit All next to Social Security (SSA-1099 and RRB-1099). Follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Be sure to enter all fields from the SSA-1099, not just the net benefits. Any tax withheld will lower your tax burden and the medicare premiums can possibly be used as an itemized deduction.

I had this problem but was finally able to do it by double-clicking in the field.
This was not at all obvious.   If this doesn't work then it may be you have a defective
copy of the software and may need to have Intuit give you a new one.

Which TurboTax program are you using?

The TurboTax online web-based editions?

Or the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions installed on your personal computer?  If desktop, which operation system, Windows or Mac?

Ok...Try this procedure -

Save your tax return and then close the TurboTax program

Click on Apply and on OK

Start the TurboTax program and see if the problem persists
