Turbo tax problem on IRA forms

When I enter the gross distribution from my IRA using the form sent to me by the Bank,  I enter the amount of the taxable part of the distribution which is "0"  Intuit error check says it can't be "0"

The step by step guide does ask if was a charitable distribution, which all of it is

Your software people need to get this corrected

TurboTax sometimes doesn't accept a "0" entry in the software for certain sections of the Tax return. Remove the "0" and keep it blank.

This is not a TurboTax problem. You must enter the Form 1099-R exactly as received, including the amount shown in box 2a of the Form 1099-R provided by the payer.  You then must mark the box to indicate that the distribution was transferred to charity and the amount that was transferred to charity.  TurboTax will include the entire gross amount on line 4a but will exclude from line 4b with the "QCD" notation the amount transferred to charity.

I did all that before I made this post and it still shows up as an error

To address the question, I would like to do a Diagnostic. The diagnostic code is used by the TurboTax Agent to view your "scrubbed" copy of your return when you are having certain problems that cannot be resolved.  You, the customer give the agent this code for them to enter.  Your personal information is removed. Here are the steps to get the code:

  1. Sign in to their TurboTax account.
  2. Open or continue their return.
  3. In the left panel, Select Tax Tools, and then Tools
  4. In the Tools Center pop-up, select Share my file with Agent
    • They’re notified that all personally identifiable information (PII) is being removed
  5. Tell you the seven-digit token number that appears
  6. Select to close the Tools Center pop-up

Please add this token number to your post.

Delete the offending 1099-R form and reenter it, making sure that the amount that you enter in box 2a is the same as the amount in box 1, the same as it appears on the Form 1099-R provided by the payer.

Unfortunately Turbotax software thinks it is smaller that the 1099 R that I received.  The form the bank sent me had 00.00 in the taxable amount line.  I enter 0, but turbotax calls it an error.  After repeated tries, I decided to file by mail since Turbotax would not allow me to file online.

On a Form 1099-R with only code 1, 2 or 7 in box 7 and the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box marked, the payer is never permitted to report a zero in box 2a (unless they are also reporting a zero in box 1 because the form is a corrected form intended to show that there was actually no distribution from the traditional IRA).  The amount in box 2a must be the same as the amount in box 1 unless the form is reporting a distribution of an excess contribution after the due date of the tax return, in which case box 2a is required to be left blank.

Right or wrong on the payer, i can only enter what the payer reported to the IRS.  The entire distribution was sent direct to a 501 c3 non-profit organization so there is no tax liability.   This is the 4th year in a row that it has been that way, but the first year Turbotax would not allow me to file online.
