SSI

My father asked me to do his taxes because he was worried about oweing to state. He is 72 and only gets SSI and gets the recommended amount taken out of his 401k every year. He paid for Medicare B and D and property Taxes. I entered all that info in and according to your program it says he is getting all his federal taxes he paid back. Is this correct?

He does not work and does not have any income but SSI. Please help.

Yes, that is correct especially if the amount of 1/2 of his SSI and the distribution from his 401K are less than his Standard or Itemized Deduction amounts. You can easily check this in Turbo Tax Online by going to:

  1. Log or open Turbo Tax
  2. Go to to Tax Tools>Tools>view Tax Summary
  3. Check the 6 line down where it says Taxable income.  If this is 0 then he is eligible to receive all of his withholding that he paid in.
  4. If you are using the software, you can go to forms and check the 1040.  If line 15 says 0, then he will receive his taxes that were withheld.

Thank you very much! I just wanted to double check because i didn't want him to get in trouble with IRS. My Mom always did this and she is no longer with us so i was worried.  Thank you again.
