I have never had a retirement plan before I started working for the school. How does this affect my taxes and how do I know if I filled it out correctly?

If you have a retirement plan through your employer it is shown in box 12 of your W-2.   You just enter your W-2 as it appears,  You do not enter the retirement $ anywhere else.
