How to report Backdoor IRA contribution?

I'm trying to enter backdoor Roth IRA conversion following this article: https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/retirement-benefits/enter-backdoor-roth-ira-conversion/L7gGPjKVY_US_en_US?uid=m96au3vg. However, its not up-to-date and doesn't mention how to answer this question - How much of the $7000 you contributed to a traditional IRA for 2024 did you switch or "recharacterize" to a Roth IRA?

This article is up-to-date.  The backdoor method refers to converting a non-deductible IRA to a Roth.

It sounds like in the deductions section, you need to choose to make your contribution nondeductible. That is bullet 5 in Step 1.

Yes, I’m doing non-deductible Tranditional IRA conversion to Roth IRA. It asks about recharacterization and the article doesn’t mention anything about it

It seems you said "Yes" on the "Did You Change Your Mind?" screen (step 4 in TurboTax Online and step 9 in TurboTax Desktop) since you are getting the "How much of the $7000 you contributed to a traditional IRA for 2024 did you switch or "recharacterize" to a Roth IRA" question. Please don't enter anything on this screen (leave it blank) since you did not make a recharacterization.

Please see What are IRA conversions and recharacterizations? for additional information.

These are the sequence of questions I see:

  • Tradional IRA and Roth IRA - I selected T IRA
  • Is this repayment of a Retirement Distribution - No
  • Tell us how much you contributed - I enter $7000 and same amount for contribution between Jan 1 2025 and Apr 15 2025 since i contributed this year for last year
  • Tell us how much you transferred
This is where it asks fir recharacterization question. I’m entering 0 here but wanted to call out that this sequence of steps are not what the article mentions
