Form 5329

We neglected to take an RMD withdrawal for 2022. In preparing the tax return (using disk download for PC), I filled out the info for the waiver. How do I know that this info and the 5329 form will be included when I E-file?

Do I have to mail the form into the IRS?

If you have entered everything into TurboTax properly, and are requesting a waiver of the penalty for missing your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) you can check to see if the Form 5329 is there by using "Forms" mode.

To switch to Forms Mode, open your return and select the Forms icon in the top-right corner of the screen (or choose Forms from the View menu at top).

Click here for detailed instruction regarding "Forms Mode" in TurboTax.

Enter the forms mode and click on open form. Type in 5329. Choose 5329-T for the taxpayer (first person listed on your tax return), or 5329-S (for spouse - 2nd person on tax return).

This should bring you to the form.  If you have entered your information correctly it should be filled out.

To fill out form 5329:

  1. Open your return and click on Search on the top of your screen.
  2. In the Search box, type form 5329 and click on the magnifying glass icon on the right
  3. Click on the link Jump to form 5329
  4. TurboTax will take you to a section where you can fill out form 5329, which will be included in your tax return.

You do not need to mail in your Form 5329 if you e-file, it will be transmitted with your return. You will only have to mail it in if you are mailing in your return.

It sounds like TurboTax has fixed the old problem with Form 5329 for missing the entire  RMD, since you are already filling out an explanation statement.
