Form 1099-G Error

Form 1099-G for Certain Government Payments has an error.  On the top of page 2, the "State or local abbreviations" requires a 2-character state abbreviation.  HOWEVER, the pull-down selection shows only the spelled-out name of the state; not the 2-character abbreviation.  When the state is selected, the "state abbreviation box" shows an error that cannot be corrected by the user.

Are you using TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop Windows or TurboTax Desktop Mac?

You are correct that the pull-down menu shows the full names of the states and local taxing agencies that may give refunds.

But where is this "the "state abbreviation box" shows an error that cannot be corrected by the user."? On the input, on the tax forms, where?

I appreciate your reply about the Form 1099-G "error" and believe I have found the root cause.

I am using TurboTax Desktop Windows.

The "state abbreviation box" is on the 1099-G Form.  Under "Additional Government Payments Information":

PLEASE NOTE: The red font "NJ," which signifies an error.  I selected the NJ from the State pull-down options list (could be any state in the State pull-down list).  The pull-down options list shows the state spelled-out (not just the state abbreviation).  Initially I thought the "red NJ" error was caused because the pull-down shows the entire state name and the abbreviation box should show only the abbreviation.

I did not input "xxx" under Local.  I do not know how "xxx" was assigned. ??

HOWEVER, when I remove the "xxx" under the "Local," then the error is no longer shown.

So, the solution for the user is to not select a State and a Local.  Select a State or Local.  Ensure either State or Local is blank.  The instructions, "Enter the abbreviation of the state or locality issuing the payment" does indicate to enter the State OR Locality.  Perhaps this instruction can be emphasized, to aid other users who may experience the error.

Hope this answers your questions and clarifies what I saw on the Form 1099-G.  Thanks...
