Box12 DD taxed on return

As I was filing my 2024 taxes, I saw the comparison from last year to this year and the calculations looked off, and instead of owing taxes last year, I should have gotten a refund.  Well, come to find out, it appears that I was taxed on the information imported from my W2 in Box12, but it was coded as DD, which from my understanding, that is not taxable income.  Do I now need to file an amendment?

It depends. Box 12, of your W-2 shows Code DD: Cost of employer-sponsored health coverage. There is no indication this would change your tax return. The best thing to do is to review your 2023 and 2024 tax return line by line, for comparison.

  • Box 12 amounts with the code DD signify the total cost of what you and your employer paid for your employer-sponsored health coverage plan.
  • Code DD amounts are for informational purposes only—they don't affect the numbers in your tax return.
    • Nevertheless, you should enter the Code DD and the amount of your employer-sponsored health coverage plan if you see it on your W-2.

You have access to all forms when you choose to print your return in TurboTax Online/Mobile.  However you are required to pay before printing, but do not have to file until you are ready.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop you can switch to Forms and review all forms and worksheets.

Thank you so much for your response!

The problem that I’m facing is that when my W2 was imported over, that box 12 with code DD created a schedule 2 on my return and did in fact affect the numbers on my return because that figure  was calculated as additional taxes.  That’s why I was wondering if I should refile my taxes from that year to correct that issue.

Please share which line of the Schedule 2 you are seeing the amount from your W-2 box 12 code DD.

Hi!

It is showing on line 21 of my schedule 2.

Line 21 is just the Total for schedule 2.  What actual line on sch  2  does it show up on?  Is it the exact same amount as your W2 DD?  Also it sounds like it imported wrong.  That's common.  Delete the W2 and enter it again MANUALLY.  That usually fixes it.   I bet it got imported as a single D and not DD so it thinks you made an excess 401K contribution.

My apologies…it is line 13.  Yes, it does appear to be imported incorrectly.  This is from my last year’s taxes…so, my question was should I refile them…and it seems like from your response, that may be best.
