Box 12 Question

My box 12 has two separate amounts on it, one says D 23 amount of 17.60 the second line says D with an amount of 4389.76. I am unable to submit my portion on turbotax as it does not allow me to have two box 12 entries. Do I add both together or am I supposed to do something else?

Do not add the two entries together. On the screen where you enter your W-2, below the box 12 entry, there is a button that says "Add another box 12 item." Click that button to make the second entry.

I don't know what D 23 is. The allowable codes are only one or two letters. You will have to ask your employer what the D 23 is.

The W-2 box 12 code D amount is the what you contributed to your employer's 401(k).  This amount is not entered anywhere else on your tax return

The box 12 with a code D 23 indicates a 2023 contribution.  Do not enter the D 23 amount or code on the W-2.

from what I understand the 23 is supposed to be extra deferrals made in the year 23 and is otherwise the same as D but I'm unable to have 2 box12 entries for code D

As answered above leave off the D 23 amount.  Ignore that line.

Your employer should have issued a corrected W-2 for 2023. You cannot make an entry for 2023 on your 2024 W-2 or your 2024 tax return. Considering the small amount involved, I agree with DoninGA and VolvoGirl. Just ignore the D 23 amount. Make only one entry in box 12, with code D and the amount of 4389.76.

Or you could combine them.

If you have two Code D (like one with the year ie: D22) Either combine them or leave off the D22.  22 refers to the year 2022.
