1099-R Type of Account

I received a 1099-R for a Total Distribution in 2024 from an Annuity I inherited from my Mother in 2022.  When I enter the information turbotax takes the information without issue, but at the Federal Review I am prompted to enter a 'Type of Account' with the options being a 403b, IRA, or Other.

I chose 'Other' (and I have tried IRA with the same result)

After accepting the change, I am prompted to review the 1099-R again.  This time, the guide indicates that a Type of Account should not be entered for this entry, so I set it to 'No Entry' and hit 'Continue'.

After changing to 'No Entry', I am prompted to review and prompted to enter a 'Type of Account' again.  The process starts over.

Please let me know what I need to do to properly answer the questions regarding my 1099-R.

Thank You,

Robert

When asked when your mother was born, indicate that she was born after December 31, 1951 even if that's untrue.  For a code 4D Form 1099-R, TurboTax shouldn't even be asking when your mother was born.

Thank You!!  That change resolved the issue.

I am having this exact issue, but the fix you gave did not work for me.  No matter which option I choose for when the previous plan owner was born, I end up in the same loop.  Any other recommendations?

today i removed the more than one code for box 7 and put the D into box 7 did the review, which cleared, then opened the 1099r again and added the 4 into the second box. then it again passed review. and submitted.

i think i will use something else next year as this has been an ongoing issue for years from searching. i will try and come back and let you know if it was accepted

I too am trying to enter a 1099-R for an inherited annuity.  I entered codes 4 & D for box 7 and the second value for box 7 as that is what is on the form.  The stumbling block seems to be that Turbotax won't allow its own advice. In the following screen snip you can see turbotax saying, "Type of account should not be selected".  However clicking 'No Entry' does not clear the type of account entry on the form.   Then when it is saved it won't pass validation as the "type of account should not be selected", but selecting "No Entry" doesn't really change anything.  Seems like a straight forward software problem as selecting 'No Entry' should clear all three buttons in the "Type of account", but it doesn't. Or the choice 'Other' should be accepted for everything not an IRA or 403.  I have tried some of the recommended workarounds and while some may work they all seem like knowingly putting an error or fib on a federal form. Never the best thing to do.

This worked for me as well. I had to select "born after 1951" to get past this. All of the information was correct, but the software was assuming that this must be a qualified plan even though it's non-qualified.

Same problem here, but changing the birth date is not working for me. Intuit, please fix this problem!

I am stuck in the exact same loop. It did not come from an IRA or 403B and I can not proceed any further in finalizing my return. Please fix.

What worked for me was to go back to the 1099 and remove the box 7 number and just leave the d. Save it and review it. Then go back and add the number back in and go to final review.

And it passed and was accepted.  I also had to do the date as the last one after 1951

Shouldn't be so hard in March. I could see it in January.

Good luck

Exact same issue here. Inherited annuity ( continuation optioni) getting the same error.

If the code in Box 7 is both 7 and D, omit the 7, and just use D.   @josephsestrich

Dawn,

What would your suggestion be if the number and letter is 4D? Hoping turbo tax can fix this.

Exit the review.  Delete the 1099-R and re-enter it.    This section was recently updated; you should not get the question about it being from a 403b or any other qualified plan.  @TaxR136

I actually tried that earlier this afternoon (03/17/25) and got the same result.

Oddly, I didnt realize that it wouldnt let me e-file until it was fixed, so I proceeded to ignore it, and then when it gave me yet another error and asked me to review it when I was trying to file, I went back and chose no entry and this time it accepted it.

Dawn, I had that same code. Following the advice from another person, I selected the option that I only had one character in the code. I entered either 4 or D. Went through the remaining questions in that section. Then went back and did it again, said only one character, but entered the other character. THEN I got a screen that said I had entered the same character (e.g., DD), which I had not, but it let me change one of them, so I changed one of them to 4. Voila, I sailed through after that. I hope the same is true for you!

Look up higher in this post. You will see that I found a workaround. Also says it was fixed? I got mine accepted before the fix, if it works. I have not got my refund sent yet so still not sure if it is all ok or not.
