What is non taxable combat pay?

Income earned by military members who are serving in a designated combat zone is non-taxable income.  That income will show up on the Form W2 in box 12 with a code "Q". 

 

For the purposes of some credits like the Earned Income Credit, the non-taxable combat pay may be used to help qualify.
