Self employed
To claim an exemption from self-employment tax with Form 4029:
- Type sch c in Search in the upper right (the magnifying glass)
- Tap Jump to sch c
- On “Your 2022 self-employed work summary,” Edit your business or Add another line of work
- On “Tell us the type of self-employment work you do,” say I work in Clergy, then Continue
- On “Let’s confirm your clergy work,” select Yes, I work in Clergy services, then Continue
- Continue through the screens until you come to “Let’s get your clergy or religious sect info”
- Select I’m exempt from self-employment tax. I’ve filed form 4029
Form 4029 is used by members of recognized religious groups to apply for exemption from social security and Medicare taxes. The exemption is for individuals and partnerships (when all the partners have approved certification).
Note: The election to waive social security benefits, including Medicare benefits, applies to all wages and self-employment income earned before and during the effective period of this exemption and is irrevocable for that period.
