Tax help for military filers
You will file a CA non-resident return that excludes your active duty military pay from CA state taxes.
- Start in the "My Info" section
- "Edit" your information.
- Indicate you are/were military and answer the follow on military questions.
- Next indicate your resident state is CA and you did not live in any other states.
- "Continue"
- Scroll down to "Other state income" "Edit"
- Indicate you were stationed in HI
- Answer "Yes" or "No" if you earned any other income in HI
- "Continue"
- Next "Revisit" the "W2" topic in the "Income" tab
- "Edit" your Military W2
- After the form entry pages you will see a follow on page for "Special Situations"
- Indicate "Active duty Pay" on that page
- Revisit and continue your CA state interview.
- "Update" the "General Info" section
- You will be asked residency questions concerning your military status
- Ultimately TurboTax will select non-resident CA for you
- Your CA tax liability will be adjusted accordingly
