Retirement tax questions
No, you cannot get an extension--the last day to request an extension for 2018 was April 15, 2019. Now your return is just late. If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due then you will also be subject to penalties and interest, for which will be billed later by the IRS, after they receive your return and your payment as shown on the Form 1040.
Now the return must be filed by printing, signing and mailing it. It cannot be e-filed.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
