Retirement tax questions
You will have the 6% penalty on your 2022 and 2023 return (assuming you could not apply the 2022 excess as a 2023 contribution). If you didn't pay the 6% penalty then please see How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year? to add Form 5329 for 2022 and 2023.
On your 2022 return all you have to do is enter the Roth IRA contribution.
On your 2023 return follow these steps:
- Click on "Search" on the top right and type “IRA contributions”
- Click on “Jump to IRA contributions"
- Select “Roth IRA”
- On the "Do you have any Excess Roth Contributions" answer "Yes"
- On the "Enter Excess Contributions" screen enter the total excess contribution from 2022
- Continue through the questions
To enter the 2024 Form 1099-R with code T on your 2024 return which will resolve the excess contribution:
- Login to your TurboTax Account
- Click on "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
- Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter all your 1099-Rs
- Click "Continue" on the "Review your 1099-R info" screen
- Continue through the questions until the "Do you have any Excess Roth Contributions" answer "Yes"
- On the "Enter Excess Contributions" screen enter the total excess contribution from 2022 (assuming this wasn't applied to 2023).
