Retirement tax questions

Yes, you're required to report a 1099-R on your tax return. You'll get a Form 1099-R if you received $10 or more from a retirement plan. You're required to report it, even if the distribution isn't taxable.

To enter the form if you didn't submit your return:

  • Navigating to 1099-R:
    • From Tax Home, select Wages & Income.
    • Scroll down to the Retirement Plans and Social Security section.
    • Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).
  • Searching 1099-R:
    • Open the tax return in progress.
    • Select the Search icon (magnifying glass) in the top right corner of the display.
    • In the search bar, enter 1099-R.
    • Select the Jump to 1099-R link.

If you filed your return, you need to amend it to add form 1099-R:

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
