Sorry, but you are mistaken when you say that "Ssdi is not supposed to be used."

 

When you file a joint tax return, you are required to enter all of your combined income, including your Social Security benefits.   Social Security is taxable income if you have enough other income.   

 

And...earned income credit is based on the income earned by working but the SS counts toward the AGI that is used when the calculations are done to determine if you are eligible for earned income credit.
