Retirement tax questions
A 2022 Form 1099-R doesn't belong on a 2023 return and has to be entered on your 2022 tax return. As Bsch4477 mentioned, you can only file your 2023 return online.
If you haven't filed your 2022 tax return, then see How do I file a 2022, 2021, or 2020 tax return? on how to start your 2022 tax return.
If you have previously filed your 2022 tax return but didn't include the 2022 Form 1099-R, then you will need to amend your 2022 tax return and see How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?
To enter your 2022 1099-R on your 2022 tax return:
- Open your 2022 tax return
- Click "Federal Taxes" at the top and select "Wages & Income"
- Click "I'll choose what to work on"
- Scroll down and click "Start" next to "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan (1099-R)"
You can also find the 1099-R section using Search:
- Open your 2022 tax return
- Click on the Search box at the top and type “1099-R”
- Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
