Investors & landlords
I am assuming you are the tenant and rent a property that needed work done to it?
If this was for reimbursement for fixes you performed on a property where you were the tenant and you did not earn any actual income from it, then you will add this as other income and then take additional steps to remove it from your income.
To enter the 1099 NEC as non-self-employment income take the following steps:
- Income
- 1099-NEC under Other Common Income
- Enter the information from the 1099-NEC
- Continue through and say the work this is a hobby activity
- continue through
Then you will take the following steps to remove the income:
- Income
- Less Common Income
- Miscellaneous Income
- Other Reportable Income
- Answer Yes to Any Other Taxable Income
- Enter the description such as 1099-NEC received for reimbursement for fixes you performed on your rental
- Enter the amount on the 1099-NEC as a negative number.
If you are the landlord, you would need to report this 1099-NEC on your Schedule E as income and then you can deduct the expenses incurred under expenses for the rental unit.
To enter the Rental income and expenses select the following:
- Federal
- Wages and Income
- Rental Properties and Royalties
- Walk through the steps answering the questions as they apply to you to enter your income and expenses
