It's not a matter of justifying the cost of filing accurately, it is an IRS requirement that you not only report all of your income if you are required to file a tax return but if you have more than $400 in self-employment income, you are required to file.  Also, if you do not enter the self-employment income, you are not allowed to take the potential benefit if you experienced a loss for the year in your business.
