Deductions & credits
There is not an actual credit for being a caregiver for an elderly parent. Instead, if you are financially supporting them, and can claim them as a dependent on your return, then you can claim the $500 Non-Refundable Other Dependent Credit as well as file as Head of Household.
To claim your parent as a Qualifying Relative, they must meet the following criteria
- Not a qualifying child of another taxpayer
- Someone that you provided over half of their support for during the tax year
- Has less than $5,050 in income (not counting social security)
