Deductions & credits

To enter your per diem rates, you will select the following:

  1. Business Expenses
  2. Other Common Business Expenses
  3. Meals and Entertainment
  4. Then select 80% Limit
  5. To see the 80%  limit, you will need to be sure in the business profile that you select that you are subject to the DOT hours of service limit.

Your per diem rates are based on your location of travel, not your home location.  A truck driver who is gone long enough that they must stop either overnight or are gone long enough that you need to stop for substantial sleep or rest, you would be able to claim the per diem based on the location you are traveling through or stopping.  If your home is in Indiana, but you traveled to Pennsylvania where you ate and slept, your per diem would be based on PA rates not Indiana rates.  So if you are a local delivery truck driver, you would not qualify for the meals and expense deduction.
