Deductions & credits

I think you need to review your personal information section. If it is saying someone else can claim you as a dependent, you must have checked this box in the personal information section. I assume no one is claiming you as a dependent.

Secondly, when it says there were no net qualified education expenses, I assume this is because, on the 1098-T, the amount in box 5 is more than the amount in box 1, meaning she had grants and scholarships that covered her tuition.

If she qualifies for the American Opportunity Tax Credit, you will be asked to include additional expenses for items such as books. You likely didn't get these questions since you are currently not qualifying based on your incorrect dependent status.

To be eligible for AOTC, the student must:

  • Be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential
  • Be enrolled at least half-time for at least one academic period* beginning in the tax year
  • Not have finished the first four years of higher education at the beginning of the tax year
  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years
  • Not have a felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year
  • *Academic Period can be semesters, trimesters, quarters or any other period of study, such as a summer school session. The schools determine the academic periods. For schools that use clock or credit hours and do not have academic terms, the payment period may be treated as an academic period.
