Deductions & credits

What was on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040?   Did you receive any of the advance payments of $250 or $300 per month for your child between July and December in 2021?  Do not rely on your memory.   Check your bank account to see if there were deposits made.  When you prepared your 2021 tax return you had to enter the amounts of the advance CTC payments sent to you and/or to your spouse.   The IRS sent letter 6419 to you showing how much they issued.   You were only entitled to get the remaining half of the CTC as a credit on line 28 of your Form 1040.   Lots of people made mistakes and either did not enter the advance payments at all or only entered the amount attributed to one of the parents.   If you filed a joint return they sent a letter to each of you and both amounts had to be entered.

The total amount you could have received--including advance payments---- was $3600 for a child under the age of 6 or $3000 for a child six to 17 years old.   If the child turned 18 before the year of 2021 ended then you could not get the CTC for the child.

If the IRS made a mistake then you can dispute the amount they say they sent to you by following the instructions in their letter.
