Here is what you need to know to file or amend a 2018 tax return.
To file a 2018 return, see How do I prepare a 2018 tax return? You'll need to purchase and download the TurboTax software for PC or Mac as TurboTax Online and the mobile app are only available for the current tax year. If you have a refund coming from 2018, be sure to file it before 04/18/22. That is the last day that have to issue you a refund from 2018. If you file after that, you most likely will not get your refund!!! If you received an extension for the 2018 return then your deadline is October 17, 2022.
To amend 2018, see How to File an Amended Tax Return with the IRS Keep in mind you must file it within three years after you filed the original return, or within two years after you paid any tax due from that return—whichever is later. To amend a return for 2018 or earlier, you'll need to print the completed Form 1040-X (no e-filing available) and any other forms you're amending. Attach any necessary supporting documentation, such as:
- Any new or amended W-2s or 1099 forms
- Other forms or schedules that changed, such as Schedule A if you updated your itemized deductions
- Your CP2000 notice if you’re amending your tax return because of a notice you received from the IRS
Mail all the forms and documents to the address provided in the instructions. If amending your tax return results in a higher tax bill, you will need to make an additional tax payment. For an e-filed amended return, you can make a payment electronically through TurboTax. Otherwise, you can mail a check with the amendment. By making a payment now instead of waiting for the IRS to send an invoice, you can minimize the interest and penalties you'll owe.
