Deductions & credits
It depends. First of all, are you able to itemize your deductions this year or are you claiming a standard deduction. If you are not sure, go to federal>deductions and credits, and continue through the screens. You will eventually reach a screen that informs you that either the standard or itemized deduction is right for you. If it shows that the standard deduction is right for you, follow these steps.
- Go to federal>deductions and credits>Charitable Donations
- Donations to Charity in 2020>remove all charitable donations entered in this section of your return. After your donations have been removed, follow these steps.
- Click "Federal" from the left side of your screen
- Click “Deductions &Credits” on the top
- Scroll all the way down and click the "Wrap up tax breaks" button
- Continue until the "Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act" screen
- Enter your charitable cash contributions up to $300
- Make sure to remove your charitable donation information from your return before entering this $300 cash contribution.
If you are able to itemize your deductions, leave your charitable donation information in. if you are still receiving this error, just remove the $300 from Box 10b or enter 0 if it insists on having a value recorded.
