File a joint return. Your wife's VA benefits are not taxable and do not get entered on the tax return. You can file a joint return even if one spouse has little or no income. That way you get the highest standard deduction for a married couple -- $24,800 -- which reduces the amount of income that is taxable, and any other child-related credits that you qualify for.
