State tax filing
You would not have to file a New York income tax return if you are temporarily in the state and are not working for a New York company.
New York says, "If you do not meet the requirements to be a resident, you may still owe New York tax as a nonresident if you have income from New York sources." Income from a Texas-based company with no connect to NY earned by a nonresident temporarily in NY would not be NY source income.
