State tax filing

Kansas is your state of residence. Attending college is considered a “temporary absence.” In almost all cases, you remain a resident of your home state while in school.

Texas does not have an income tax, but you will have to pay Kansas tax on your internship earnings. Check to see whether your employer can withhold Kansas income tax, if it is not being done already. You can file Form K-4.

Otherwise you may want to make estimated tax payments so you don’t owe a lot in Kansas tax next year.
