No you do not have to install two copies of the program. Just one program can be used to prepare and e-file up to 5 federal returns--more can actually be prepared if they are mailed. All you need to do is download the two state software programs for the software and you are good to go. The taxpayer who needs MD can use it; the taxpayer who needs NC can use the NC software. You always prepare the federal return first, then the state.
