State tax filing
Yes. If Massachusetts state tax was withheld in error, then you can file to get everything back.
- Go to the Massachusetts section.
- On the screen “Apportion Your Wages?” select YES
- On “Nonresident Apportionment” tap EDIT next to your W-2
- On “Apportionment Method” chose Working Days
- Enter Total Working Days Outside Massachusetts and “0” for Total Working Days Inside Massachusetts
- On the screen “Wages you earned outside of Massachusetts” the number should equal W-2 Box 16 Massachusetts income.
It’s likely you will owe some Maryland tax because you had no MD withholding for those paychecks where your state taxes went to MA.
