State tax filing
Yes, you will have to file a non-resident California return if you were physically working in the Golden State (not working remote).
As a nonresident, you pay tax on your taxable income from California sources. Sourced income includes, but is not limited to:
- Services performed in California
- Rent from real property located in California
- The sale or transfer of real California property
- Income from a California business, trade or profession
See: Part-year resident and nonresident
There are several reasons your California refund numbers did not change.
Check boxes 15-20 on your W-2. Does it show California wages and withholding? Your employer may have listed you as Nevada.
Did you complete the California section in TurboTax? The state section must be done from end-to-end for TurboTax to create an accurate California tax return.
- For example, California asks the number of days you spent in the state during the year.
- You will also have to tell TurboTax how much of your income was earned in California. On the screen Did you earn all of your income in California, TurboTax will show your Total wages and ask you to confirm How much of the $xxx from federal Form(s) W-2 did you earn in California. Check whether the amount is correct.
