Yes, you should only claim a credit for the income you were taxed on by MA while living in MO from January through August. Once you moved to MA in August, from that point on, that is not taxable income to MO.
The net effect is the same because whether you claim 8 months' worth or 12 months' worth, the credit for the tax that MA collects will wipe out any tax you owe MO.
