State tax filing
Virginia requires you to file separately so the easiest way to file is to file federal and state as married filing separately. You will need two TurboTax accounts and will pay twice. However you can e-file all your return.
You can file a joint federal and separate state returns using CD/Desktop. Any joint returns can be e-filed. Separate returns will be mailed.
How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?
Indiana requires you to use the same filing status as federal.
- Filing together. If you file together, your Virginia income will be included on your Indiana return. You can claim a credit for tax paid to VA.
- Filing separate. If you file separate federal returns, you can file separate IN returns. Only your IN income will be taxed on your return. There is no tax credit.
Virginia requires you to file separately.
Ohio and Indiana has a reciprocal agreement, so generally you will not have to file an Ohio return because your employer should have withheld IN tax. In that case, you would add you OH income to IN and only file IN, not OH.
