To get your money back, file a nonresident Detroit return and fill it out showing you worked 0 days in Detroit.
Here's how to do it:
- In Michigan, check that you need a Detroit City return in Which Cities Did You Live or Work In?
- Check that you file as a Detroit Nonresident
- Keep going until you see A few things before we wrap up your state taxes
- Start Michigan City Tax
- Check Detroit on Live or Work in Any of These Cities?
- Select Work on Detroit return and select file as a Detroit Nonresident
- Edit your Detroit Wages
- On Detroit Wage Adjustment, select Working Days Allocation under Adjustment Type
- Fill in the information in Allocation of Detroit Wages. Enter 0 for Total days Worked in Detroit
