State tax filing
TurboTax DOES eFile the Minnesota Property Tax form M1PR for 2020.
IMPORTANT: It does not automatically eFile when you eFile the Fed and State. You have to go back in to the program and select File and go through the eFile process a second time.
In my case that second time was after the Federal and State returns were accepted. I don't know if that needed to happen first or if you could just do it right away. In any case, TurboTax needs to be updated to better guide the user through this process. As I stated in my original post, it wasn't clear if the M1PR was eFiled or not and only found how to do it by going back in to the Filing section.
As it stands now the steps to eFile in TurboTax Deluxe 2020 are as follows:
- eFile the Fed and State
- Wait for the returns to be accepted (or not - mine already were so I can't tell if necessary)
- Reopen TurboTax
- Click on Filing (File a Return)
- Select E-File, Continue
- It should then show your Minnesota Property Tax and list that your Federal and State have already been transmitted.
- Select e-File now, Continue
- Follow the rest of the prompts to select your refund method and hit "Transmit Return Now"
- End up on the "Returns Have Been Sent" page and note that it now shows Minnesota Property Tax under the Transmission Confirmation
- Save your file before exiting
- Check back in a few days to make sure it's been accepted (I'm not this far yet but I assume it will tell you just like the others. If not, I'll post again.)
The instructions at Can I file my M1PR (Minnesota Property Tax Refund)... (intuit.com) are out of date for 2020 and I did use the feedback link on that page to say so and to ask that TurboTax also be updated to better guide the user through and make it clear how to eFile the M1PR.
