After you file
Please see the information below for reasons why your status may not have changed yet:
- Make sure when checking your refund Where's My Refund? you enter your exact federal refund dollar amount (not combined with your state). For tax year 2018, you can get this number from line 19 on Form 1040.
- Does your refund contain, EIC or Additional Child Tax Credit? The IRS will begin issuing tax refunds on returns on these returns on February 27, 2019.
- Go to our e-file status lookup tool to get your current status and verify that your return has been accepted. (You should see pending, rejected, or accepted.)
- After acceptance, the next step is for the government to approve your refund. First, they look for things like back taxes and unpaid child support. If they find any debts, they'll offset (reduce) your refund to cover the outstanding amount. Once they are satisfied that you have no outstanding debts, they will approve and then issue your refund.
- The IRS releases most refunds within 21 calendar days after the e-filed return has been accepted (received), not 21 days from the e-filing date.
- If you don't see a status, go through the File section again all the way to the end and be sure to click the green Transmit Returns Now button.
- You can find additional information on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions
Note: If you see that your refund has been accepted, but it has been longer than 21 days an IRS representatives will be able to research the status of your refund. Call them at 1-800-829-1040.
