After you file
Was the other parent's return rejected? If they have not e-filed yet, their e-file claiming the child will be rejected when they try. Alert them asap.
You will indeed need to amend, but the other parent does not need to wait for you to do that. Waiting will not help them at all. There are two ways the other parent can file and claim the child now. One is to file their return by mail; mailed returns are not rejected.
Or the other parent can get IP PIN's to e-file.

When your return has been fully processed, you will need to file an amended return and remove the child as a dependent from MY INFO; expect to pay back refundable child-related credits that you receive.
