After you file

You do not say why you think your ex-spouse got your refund check.   Did you prepare a tax return and use an old address that the ex-spouse lives at?   Was a check mailed to your old address?  Why do you think your "ex" got your refund?

Did you prepare a tax return?    The refund would be sent to the bank account or address that you entered on your own tax return--not to your ex-spouse.    If you did not file a return, then do so and make sure you use correct information for the refund.   If your ex did anything using your SSN on a tax return, the IRS will sort out the duplicate use of your SSN.   The IRS will not tell you if someone used your SSN.   You will need to print, sign and file your own return by mail.   It is too late to use online TurboTax to begin a new return.  You will need to use the desktop download software on a full PC or Mac.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
