After you file

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.

You do not mention how long ago you verified your identity.  It often takes up to nine weeks (or more) after identity verification before the IRS issues your refund.  You have not said that the IRS refund site shows that the refund was issued. You say the refund site shows your return was "received".   If the refund was not issued yet, it is not appropriate to use Form 3911.   That form is used if the IRS actually issued your refund but the refund was somehow lost.   It sounds like you need to keep waiting for the IRS to issue your refund.  Only the IRS can tell you when that will happen.  TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your tax return.

How it works

Where's My Refund shows your refund status:

  • Return Received – We received your return and are processing it.
  • Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown.
  • Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
