After you file
The IRS does not allow you to change banking information after you file your tax return, so if the card information you gave to the IRS does not work any more, they are going to mail you a check. It will be your issue to sort out how to deposit or cash the check. There is no good reason to "only" have a prepaid card issued to you by an employer. You could open a bank account and deposit the check. We have heard from some users that they were able to cash federal income tax refund checks at Walmart.
