After you file

@CatinaT1 , my reply is in bold red italics.

You can not e-file prior year amendments.

Ok. I have printed and mailed the amended tax return.

If you follow these guidelines, you should start at $0.

These guidelines were followed. It did not start at $0. It is a BUG.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due

My 2022 return was created and filed with the 2022 TurboTax Deluxe Windows desktop program. It was completely processed.

I did the amended return with the same 2022 TurboTax Deluxe program (and the updates the program installed).

When the amendment process was started it immediately showed a tax due, ie it did not start at $0. This was before any changes were made. I then switched to Forms view, looked at the 1040X form, and it had different figures in the previous/current columns with non zero amounts as a difference. This incorrect difference was the source of the refund calculator not starting at $0.

I did complete the amended form to be printed by manually overwriting prior values on the 1040X so that the difference was zero and the refund calculator started at $0, and then making my changes for the amended return.

I printed my amended return and carefully checked to make sure it was accurate, and have mailed the amended return to the IRS and mailed my amended state return to my state tax agency.

I made a protected copy (anonymized) using the TurboTax 2022 Diagnostics feature for your support team to recreate the issue and hopefully get the BUG fixed. The token number is 1226830.
